I am a huge fan of the Curve, and yes I'm talking about the "old" one.  The 8300 series of Blackberries are classic and available for every service provider.  This was one of the first Crackberries to really step it up in terms of style and design. Since these are a vintage Blackberry model, you can find them unlocked at really low prices.

App Fever

As soon as you get your unlocked blackberry curve in the mail, connect it to your PC and head over to crackberry.com. There are tons of free themes available for the curve. Suckers with the 8900 or Tour have significantly less stuff to choose from. Just another reason to go old school Blackberry. There are some essential applications like google mobile and viigo (rss feeds) that will send your productivity through the roof. Facebook / Twitter and other social apps are free so you can keep in touch.

Retail = $599!?

Yep, the 8300 curves still sell for $599 unlocked without a contract. Instead of getting ripped off, we recommend taking a look at eBay. There are hundreds of mint condition Curves ending everyday, you just have to find one for your service that you like and place that lucky winning bid! Sometimes you'll bid once and win, other times you might have to bid back and forth with someone else who wants it. Set a limit that you think it's worth, and if it goes past that, just move on to another phone. No sense in getting all caught up in the moment. Here's a tip: Try placing a bid when an auction only has a couple minutes left. Bid a good amount higher than the current price and the average eBayer bumping up their bid 5 cents at a time will never win! Good luck.

The Blackberry 8900 AKA New Curve is a real head turner. While styled fairly different from the Bold, they have many similiarities. Really just comes down to personal preference. Either way, its a Blackberry.

qwerty qwerty

One of the main things that sets this phone apart from the Bold is the keyboard. The qwerty on the 8900 has the round, clicky chiclet keys like the 8300 series curve. Those who rocked a curve in the past know that the keyboard can pump out a paragraph like its nothing. Responding to emails on the fly and lengthy texts take mere seconds.

Same old trackball?

No. The trackball on the 8900 is black! Its pretty slick. Your thumb will notice that the trackball is set a little bit deeper into the phone. I think this was a good move, as the 8300 curve is the Achilles Heel. Maybe setting it a little further deep will keep it a rollin for many years to come. The next generation of Blackberry coughonyxcough will be packing an optical mouse. I've used the Samsung Omnia for quite some time and an optical mouse on a phone is a real treat.

The best deals

Unlocked Blackberry 8900s can be hard to come by. Retailers are charging $599 to $699 plus tax. If you are a smart shopper, this is a great time to take a look at eBay. It's surprisingly easy, even if its your first time you can get a bragworthy price. Expect to pay a fraction of the actual retail price. Some are New In Box (NIB) and others are used. Either way, make sure the phone has a clear ESN so that you can activate it hassle free. Sign up / Sign in and throw out a bid when there's a couple minutes left. Good luck!

The unlocked Blackberry Bold is a beast.  Yes AT&T users, there are other phones besides the iPhone.  Rekindle the romance between your thumbs and keys with each responsive qwerty key.  The keyboard has a great feel and each key has a ridge that your fingers catch on and allow super fast typing.  Texting is a breeze, even long emails can be pumped out in a hot minute or two.

Stunning Screen

I fell in love with the Bold before even clicking a button.  One press of the trackball and the flawless screen dropped my jaw, literally.  Even the standard Blackberry logos and images in the default folder look awesome.  You can get any background you want for free easily.  Changing your background is just the beginning, you can also control the overall interface of the entire phone.  Some people have iPhone style themes, theres Android ones, and tons of unique customs.  The majority of them are free too.  Starting to see why they call it a crackberry?!

Will you be an app-aholic?

The Blackberry Bold comes with everything you need, but lets move onto everything you want.  There is an app for just about anything you need.  I got back into running due to Slacker (internet radio with a fresher mix than Pandora), and Sanoodi.  The latter turns your phone into a GPS tracker and records your pace per mile, average/top speeds, and uploads your entire path over Google maps when you get home.  Both free.

How to get a deal
